Sri Sri Sribas Angan Nabadwip

Sribas Angan is known as the “Birthplace of Kirtan,” this is the site where the congregational chanting of the Hare Krishna Maha-mantra first began behind closed doors. Historically, it was the house of Srivas Pandit, one of Mahaprabhu’s closest associates. In this house of Sribas Pandit, Mahaprabhu would come to lead ecstatic kirtans.

A famous and moving story took place at this site. It is believed, that on the day Mahaprabhu was scheduled to arrive, Sribas’s son tragically passed away. Despite his grief, Sribas instructed his wife to hide her tears, fearing that her weeping would disturb the Lord’s joy. When Sri Chaitanya eventually learned of the boy’s death, he touched the child’s body and temporarily restored his life force. The boy opened his eyes and told his mother that he was peaceful and happy in Vaikuntha, asking them not to grieve before peacefully passing away again.

Here, at Sribas Angan, you will also find a 500-year old Jujube tree (Kul tree) which is believed to have been planted by Lord Chaitanya Mahaprabhu himself and the Lord’s Paduka (footwear) which was worshipped by Sribas Pandit.

Also, at Sribas Angan, the famous “Kazi Udharan” (Civil Disobedience) movement started when the local Islamic governor, Chand Kazi, attempted to ban the chanting. The site today remains a center for traditional Bhajan and Kirtan practices.
